Colitis and Colon Cleansing

Just when you thought it was safe to read through the sometimes unwanted emails in your inbox, you run across the claim that preventing colitis with colon cleansing is a very real possibility.

If ever there was an inflated health claim, you may think to yourself, this could be it! Yet you were proven wrong when you scoffed at the claims that colon cleansing can help with weight gain, so rather than simply deleting this email, it is sensible to dig a bit deeper and see if there is any validity to the claim that preventing colitis can truly be that easy.

In general, colitis affects the colon and is characterized by a severe inflammation of that area. Colitis comes in a wide variety:

  • There is ischemic colitis that most commonly affects the elderly population.
  • Lymphocytic colitis which is often found in women suffering from autoimmune disorders.
  • Ulcerative colitis that is especially dreaded because of the sores that affect the colon and make the condition particularly painful; it is considered a genetically driven ailment.
  • While there are a wide variety of other forms of colitis, one that is especially tricky is pseudo membranous colitis which is attributed to a bacterial infection with clostridium difficile.
It is this last form of colitis – as well as any other types that have virus and bacteria infestations at their roots - that may be prevented with colon cleansing. It goes without saying that the gastrointestinal tract is a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria and also has a large number of viruses at any given time. Because bacteria thrives in the dark, moist and warm environment, and the fact that the pH balance of the intestinal tract mostly stays within a certain range, makes the colon a perfect area for these microorganisms to live and multiply. As a matter of fact, gut flora, which is the term a given to the beneficial bacteria that reside within the body’s gastrointestinal tract, are necessary for the body to break down the nutrients from the foods you eat and permit them to enter the blood stream.

However when your the gut flora is imbalanced and the “good” bacteria are replaced with dangerous strains – including clostridium difficile - pseudo membranous colitis is a very real possibility. To guarantee that such harmful bacteria are removed consistently, a healthy diet rich in fibre, such as fruits, vegetables and also whole grain breads is a must. In addition to a healthier eating, however, is the necessity to periodically cleanse the colon. This is accomplished with the help of colon cleansing.

By using a colon cleansing product, you soften and dislodge accumulated feces and other waste products that have not been eliminated by the body. These substances often harden and build up on the walls of the intestines, not only inhibiting the incorporation of nutrients into our bodies, but also providing the perfect medium for the proliferation of harmful bacteria that are ready to attack when the beneficial gut flora is harmfully impacted. Something as simple as being on antibiotics might trigger a changeover from good to bad bacteria. Preventing the vulnerability for pseudo membranous colitis by colon cleansing is a very real option.
